About Avid Media Composer‍

Avid Media Composer is video editing software used across film and television. Editors use it to assemble footage, cut scenes and finish a program for delivery.

Moments Lab and Avid Media Composer‍

An editor cutting a social version of a show often works blind. They know the episode is somewhere on NEXIS, but not where the moment is, so they ask a producer or scrub through the file. The Moments Lab panel puts the indexed catalog inside Media Composer, so they can search for the moment and drop it on the timeline without opening another tool. A producer can go further and build the selection in Moments Lab first, then hand the project to the editor, who opens the panel and finds it waiting.

How it works‍

The Moments Lab panel is a plugin that installs into Avid Media Composer. It shows your Moments Lab workspace inside Avid.

Find the moment, add it to your bin‍

Search your indexed catalog from the panel, including shows on your own storage that Moments Lab has indexed. Search whole media files or the time-coded moments inside them. Preview a moment and adjust its in and out points. Click Add to Bin and it downloads into your bin, converted to Avid OpAtom MXF, with a queue showing what's done and what failed. Projects a producer built in Moments Lab appear in the panel already selected and organized, so an editor starts cutting instead of hunting.

What lands on the machine, and where‍

Each editor sets a source media path, the local folder downloads are saved to. You can set handles in seconds, or ask for a save dialog on every download. On a poor connection, proxy mode downloads proxies to cut with and swaps in the full-res files on export. Workspaces running their own storage can point the panel at that server instead of downloading, which our team configures with you.

Getting started‍

Editors download the installer for macOS or Windows and open the panel from Extensions or Tools. They log in with their Moments Lab account, pick their region and workspace, and their Moments Lab role decides what they can see. Settings are per user, and there's nothing to deploy centrally.
